“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. “We are to study to show ourselves approved unto God. We do this by rightly dividing the word of truth. This involves taking Scripture and studying it in the context it was written in. To say this verse does not speak of studying the Bible can only considered to be heresy when read in the context of where it is written in 2 Timothy. A look at the verses preceding and following this verse brings this point out in a dramatic way.
14 Of these things put them in remembrance, charging them before the Lord that they strive not about words to no profit, but to the subverting of the hearers.
15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
16 But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.
17 And their word will eat as doth a canker: of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus;
18 Who concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already; and overthrow the faith of some.
Paul was writing to Timothy to warn him about those who would come in and try to subvert the truth. Those who would come in to deny the doctrine that is central to the whole plan of salvation. Paul is telling Timothy to know the word of truth so that he would not be swayed by these smooth talking charlatans who were only concerned about their own agenda. Hymenaeus had been already turned over to Satan by Paul because of his heretical teaching (1 Timothy 1:20). Men like Hymenaeus were skilled in debating over Scripture and had the ability to fool those who were not well versed in Scripture. Therefore Paul was telling Timothy to be well versed in Scripture by studying it. This way he would not fall into error concerning doctrines that are presented in God’s Word. Unfortunately, we in this day have an abundance of these smooth talking con men. They have at their disposal corrupted versions of God’s Word and use it to “otherthrow the faith of some.” Their god is their belly and it is only their self deifying motives that they are concerned about. These same people believe that with gain is godliness. Paul also warned Timothy to stay away from these people (1 Timothy 6:5). We are to point out these people who would subvert God’s Word and attempt to bring about division in the church (Romans 16:17). Are you well versed enough in Scripture so as not to be fooled by these smooth talking devils? Can you refute those who would attempt to use parts of God’s Word to trick you into believing those things that are contrary to God’s Word? This site is here to present studies in the Word of God that will help to bring understanding to God’s Word in the context of His Word. Proper teaching of His Word is the purpose of this site and I hope it will help in providing a more correct and rewarding understanding of God’s Word as we study to show ourselves approved unto God, workmen that need not be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
